• 2026 NSW Dolphin Census south coast 30th May -  Jervis Bay citizen science

Join the NSW Dolphin Census day

South coast, Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay area.

On Saturday 30th May 2026, Coastal communities along the NSW coast will take part in the first NSW Dolphin Census - a statewide citizen science event to help map where dolphins are found across our coastline, bays and estuaries.

This data will help fill vital knowledge gaps and improve our understanding of dolphins in New South Wales. Marine mammal research Jervis Bay is coordinating the south coast, Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay area.

By taking part, you’ll help create a valuable statewide snapshot of dolphin presence and distribution, contributing to real research and long-term conservation.

•    Complete a short FREE training session on how to conduct a dolphin survey using standard scientific methods.

•    Head to your chosen location from our south coast area zones for the 30th May and observe dolphins.

•    You can take part from a beach, headland, harbour, bay or river estuary — for as little as 15 minutes or the whole day.

•    You can choose the option that best suits your schedule when you register.

This project is delivered in partnership with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and supported by the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy.
